Large incremental backups due to video streaming

Hi There,

I seem to have an issue with ShadowProtect with a video stream..

I currently use Shadowprotect Desktop 5 to image the main drive of a computer to another separate hard disk. The computer itself is used as a server, but does not itself handle much data / processing.

The backup consists of a full backup that has incremental backups performed each hour.

On this computer, we run a steaming video feed that displays on a separate monitor.

It seems that the full backup image of the main drive is ~38GBs, with each hourly incremental ~400-500MBs.

Full Drobo system how to reduce backup

I have a Drobo system that is using 4x2GB HDD in a RAID.

my backup normally consists of a full backup every Sunday with incrementals on Tue, Thr,Sat.

Now the Drobo is full

I would like to reduce the backups however since the backup are volumes and not indivual folders I cannot reduce the amount of backups.

How do I clear some of the files from the drobo?

I have F_VOL-b001.spf, F_VOL-b001-i001.spi to F_VOL-b001-i020.spi plus .md5

F_VOL-b002.spf, F_VOL-b002-i001.spi  to F_VOL-b002-i014.spi

Detemine the source files referenced by specific .spi file

Is there a way to determine the source files referenced by a specific .spi file? 

The context is an unexpectedly large .spi file, and Id like to know which source files caused that.

Not necessary to be able to recover any actual data of those file, but just get a list of file paths.   Is there such a utility?

Can't Back Up To Network Location

I have been trying to figure out how to back up one of my computers to the hard disk on another one over the network. I have not yet been able to figure out how to do this. The stumbling block seems to be something about network credentials.

The destination computer is named GAX. The problem happens when I attempt to set up a destination. See destination.jpg for how I’m attempting to do this.

ShadowProtect Desktop 4.2.5.1675 seems to still work on Win10

I have been running ShadowProtect Desktop ver 4.2.5.1675 on Win 7 Pro for several years. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and expected ShadowProtect to stop working, but so far I am not having problems.

I'm enquiring if its possible to backup to an external USB drive (Toshiba or Lacie 2TB).  We have some single user clients that is looking for a backup/restore solution.I attended a seminar and the speaker had mentioned that these type of drives are not good.If this is true, then what type of drives are recommended? Thanks, Jon

Window 10 BitLocker Problem

Hi Folks:

   In the blizzard of crap I've been dealing with since installing Windows 10 a month ago I neglected to bitlock a drive I use for my business. 

   Today, in an abundance of caution, I backed up the contents of that drive to three extrenal drives, formatted it, locked it with BitLocker and attempted to recover.

ShadowProtect Restore Can't Find SPF Files

    I've backed up, and occasionally recovered, using ShadowProtect for over half a decade. 

    I can't remember how many times in the last month I've used the Recovery Environment to restore C: as I've struggled to get Windows 10 working. 

    Last week I recovered 50 GB onto my D: drive, which was the subject of my post about BitLocker. 

    Today I want to do a recovery of the 800 GB of files on my 1TB drive.

Incremental backups not working

I use SPX to backup my Desktop system to an external drive.  Almost every evening when the backup begins, it takes a differential backup rather than an incremental.  Now and then an incremental occurs but it seems like it takes many more differential backups.

Why does this occur?  When I used Symantex Ghost years ago, if the external drive was not always online, Ghost needed to perform something called a reconciliation which took hours.  Does SPX need the external drive to be turned on all day, even though I only take backups in the evening?

Multiple Suggestions

Hi,

I'd like to feedback multiple suggestions from my position as a Home User:

1. Licensing

I previously suggested that SC should offer 2 or 3 device licence options for Home Users as most people have a desktop plus a laptop these days as a minimum. I see this suggestion was implemented. What i didn't expect to see was a $232 fee instead of the $99 fee for this option!

How to test-restore, manually (best practice?)

Obviously, we don't want to make a horrible discovery at Restore time.

So, I want a great test method.

Is this a great method?

Perform a VirtualBoot every X weeks? 
The theory being "if a VirtualBoot works, a Restore will likely work"

In addition to this manual, periodic test, I run ImageManager (not to compress or retain images, but to verify the chain).
I also get emails for failed backups.

Summary:  Is a periodic VirtualBoot - to the being-backed-up machine - a great test strategy?

Retention policy not working?

On the largest of many backup jobs, I have set a retention policy, I have enabled a retention policy of retaining 6 backups, deleting both the full and incremental, enforcing before starting the next full backup.  This full backup job runs on the 1st and 15th of the month.

However, I just started getting messages about other backup job failures due to disk full, and I found that this large job had 9 backups on the disk.  It appears to have not enforced any part of the retention policy.  What's up with that?

Downloaded executable installation file won't run

I'm trying to update ShadowProtect from v5.2.3 to v5.2.7 and when I try to run the .exe file, nothing happens. Any other .exe file I try to run on my machine will run, just not ShadowPritect. I have an older version of a ShadowProtect installation file and it runs with no problem. I've tried downloading three of v5.2.7 and have the same results with each. Any ideas?

I have restored dozens of times on many computers over 10+ years using SP Desktop.  This is first significant, protracted failure of SPD to do the job.

My system:  Dual boot (EasyBCD 2.3):  Drive 0:  Windows 7 (skinny)  Drive 1: Windows 10 (upgr fr 7 - no issues).

HP Pavilion laptop dv7t-6100 CTO  Windows 10 drive is 3 months old.

I am investigating the failure of a 3rd party software installation....  I was gathering my tool set.

Searching Mounted Backup Image Files

I lost my Outlook Address Book in a recovery operation. I don't know the official name of the file and have tried searches for "Address Book" and "*.pst" with no luck. The searches take a very long time, so I tried some smaller files than a full backup, but even those never really finished before I gave up and exited. Can someone give me some direction?

Dear Fantom support:

Summary:  USB drive self-disconnects a minute after being connected

I have 2 laptops in my lab:
A) A new HP, Windows 10 laptop
B) An older Windows 7 laptop
Both use ESET Security

I have 3 USB drives in my lab:
1) Fantom GD2000U3A - Not ok
2) Seagate portable - OK
3) Fantom GD2000EU - OK

GD2000U3A (1) works fine with old Win7 laptop (B)

Win 10 Backup User Must Be Logged In

There is much posted about waking the computer from sleep 5 min before backup and turn off sleep mode.  After the backup have SP put on sleep mode.  While this worked prior to Win 10, I cannot get it to fire although the computer is awake at the designated time.  Having it auto login is an option and I will try that but defeating security in order for a backup to run in luducrous.  How can this go on this long when running as a service ends the issue?
